Tutor: Leigh Carbines
Cutting rocks is the first step prior to cabochon creation and also a great way to cut open any rocks found in the field to discover the interest (or maybe not) they contain on the inside. The clubs saw room contains 7 saws, available for members use. All vary in size, cutting ability and saw type. The aim of the course is to teach which saw is appropriate for cutting what types and sizes of stone, but more importantly how to maintain the saws and operate them safely. The course will include demonstrations and hands on activities with assistance as required.
During the course you will:
- Be informed of basic safety and club rules regarding use of the saws, including cleaning and reporting machinery issues
- Operate and maintain the water based trim saws and oil based (lubricated saws).
- Learn which rock types can be cut on each saw
- Use the different clamping mechanisms on the saws and learn procedure to clamp the stones in the machine
- Cut 5 slabs on each saw in order to complete the course
Rocks for this course will be provided by the club and selected by participants. All slabs cut will be retained by the club for club use. Each participant will be able to select and keep one slab of their choice at the conclusion of the course.
